One thing I enjoy doing when learning game design is watch lots of game shows. Even if they are overall not a great show they still might have cleaver game mechanics that you can learn from. The trick being to analyze each aspect of the game, being critical minded and watching for what engages the players.
One show that has been running since 2011 is called Brain Games, it isn’t like most of the shows I watch where I have to do a lot of work to see how things are done. It gives you everything and explains it for you. Focusing on psychology and how the mind works it offers a lot of fun and interesting information.
Understanding the mind and how it interacts with the world is a major key feature of game design. This show is wonderful for doing just that.
